  1. WELCOME TO FRESH STOP!

We are glad to see you on our first day of the Fresh Stop 2011 season. Welcome back to all who participated last year. And, welcome for the first time to all of you who are new to Fresh Stop. We will do our best to provide you with good quality fresh local produce.

The growing season has already been very challenging for our farmers, with the excessive rain and cool, damp weather in April and now with the extreme heat in late May and June.

The farmers have told us that strawberry season has not been as good as some years and other types of fruit such as cherries and peaches will be in shorter supply due to the weather. If you know any farmers, give them an encouraging word or two!

  2. Great Response Thus Far!

We have had great response to Fresh Stop 2011 thus far. Last week we had thirty-nine orders and this week we have forty-three orders. At the present time, the maximum weekly orders we can take is fifty, so we may have to start a waiting list.

Fresh Stop is entirely non-profit and is coordinated and operated by volunteers. We have a volunteer sign-up book at the registration desk and would welcome your signing up to help us.

  3. FRESH STOP UPDATE

We have the maximum number of participants we can serve at the present time. If you have not registered by today and you wish to participate this year, your name will be placed on a waiting list. Newcomers are always welcome to purchase from our "Market Table" where we sell produce items individually priced.

Fresh Stop "follows the season" with our local farmers. Therefore, we have things like strawberries only in the first of June, and have watermelon only in the peak of the summer. Local produce is also heavily dependent on the type of weather the farmers have in their community. This year has been somewhat challenging for farmers with a cool, very wet spring and high temperatures in the first part of June. If the quality of our produce is not the same as you think it should be, it may be due to the weather!

Part of the purpose of Fresh Stop is for all of us to learn more about how local produce is grown. It's a little different from produce you buy at the grocery store which may have come from Florida, Mexico or Chile!

  4. YEAR THREE

When I was first introduced to Fresh Stop, I knew that I really wanted to learn more about produce and how it worked and how I could implement it into my family’s diet. It has been a fascinating journey and through this process I can say it has broken all of my inhibitions that have eased the way of keeping fresh produce as my go-to staple for meal preparation.

Finally after three years, we are at the point where we use produce as snacks. When I say ‘snacks’ I’m not talking about an apple, I’m talking about using kale like I would have previously used potato chips. Now, when my teenagers look for something to cook, they no longer look at the produce and yelling “Mom, we don’t have any food!” Now it’s “Mom, look what I’ve made, do you want some?”

In the beginning I thought I was far too busy to cook from scratch. I thought it was going to be a huge undertaking that I’d have to set aside a lot of limited time for. Come to find out most of the time it’s faster, easier, and now I feel that I’m raising my children much healthier. I used to feel like the days of eating like we were intended to eat were over, and I’d have to find proper diet through whatever the stores have available. Now, I enjoy the challenge of matching what the stores have made through my Fresh Stop produce.
